![]() ![]() ![]() Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 40:2, 4, 7-8, 10, 11Ģ He pulled me up from the seething chasm, from the mud of the mire. He is abolishing the first sort to establish the second.ġ0 And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of the body of Jesus Christ made once and for all. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!ġ6 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.1 So, since the Law contains no more than a reflection of the good things which were still to come, and no true image of them, it is quite incapable of bringing the worshippers to perfection, by means of the same sacrifices repeatedly offered year after year.Ģ Otherwise, surely the offering of them would have stopped, because the worshippers, when they had been purified once, would have no awareness of sins.ģ But in fact the sins are recalled year after year in the sacrifices.Ĥ Bulls' blood and goats' blood are incapable of taking away sins,ĥ and that is why he said, on coming into the world: You wanted no sacrifice or cereal offering, but you gave me a body.Ħ You took no pleasure in burnt offering or sacrifice for sin ħ then I said, 'Here I am, I am coming,' in the scroll of the book it is written of me, to do your will, God.Ĩ He says first You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the cereal offerings, the burnt offerings and the sacrifices for sin, and you took no pleasure in them ĩ and then he says: Here I am! I am coming to do your will. But Christ will in nowise cast out any who are willing to come to him.ġ3 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone's account where there is no law.ġ4 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.ġ5 But the gift is not like the trespass. Through the grace of God, the gift by grace has abounded to many through Christ yet multitudes choose to remain under the dominion of sin and death, rather than to apply for the blessings of the reign of grace. As by the offence of one, sin and death prevailed to the condemnation of all men, so by the righteousness of one, grace prevailed to the justification of all related to Christ by faith. ![]() Notwithstanding the differences, there is a striking similarity. This free gift did not place them anew in a state of trial, but fixed them in a state of justification, as Adam would have been placed, had he stood. But the grace and mercy of God, and the free gift of righteousness and salvation, are through Jesus Christ, as man: yet the Lord from heaven has brought the multitude of believers into a more safe and exalted state than that from which they fell in Adam. Through one man's offence, all mankind are exposed to eternal condemnation. But this other man, Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness to many through God's bountiful gift.Ĭommentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Romans 5:15-19 For this one man, Adam, brought death to many through his sin. For if by the one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.Īnd what a difference between our sin and God's generous gift of forgiveness. ![]() If one man's sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God's gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do!īut the free gift is not like the offense. Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.īut the free gift is not like the trespass.
